Float Drains

For AKG Products

Float drains are automatic devices used to remove liquid condensate from compressed air systems, particularly in conjunction with aftercoolers. Compressed air aftercoolers cool hot, compressed air from compressors, causing water vapor to condense into liquid. This condensate, along with oil and contaminants, must be removed to prevent corrosion, equipment damage, and compromised air quality.

Float drains operate using a buoyant float mechanism. Inside the drain, a float is connected to a valve. As condensate collects in the drain’s reservoir, the float rises with the liquid level. When the condensate reaches a predetermined level, the float triggers the valve to open, releasing the liquid through a discharge port. Once the liquid level drops, the float lowers, closing the valve to prevent air loss. This process is automatic and requires no external power, making float drains reliable and energy-efficient.

In compressed air aftercoolers, float drains are typically installed at the bottom of the moisture separator or receiver tank, where condensate accumulates. They ensure continuous removal of liquids without manual intervention, maintaining system efficiency and protecting downstream equipment. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the float and valve, ensures optimal performance and prevents blockages.
